Atrial septal defect (ASD) closure

Dr. Karthik Reddy, a cardiologist, performs an innovative heart procedure at Medcenter One.

With the new ASD closure procedure, Dr. Reddy can repair holes between a patient’s upper heart chambers in the cardiac catheterization lab by placing a wire mesh patch into the heart to close the hole. Before repairing the holes, Dr. Reddy can examine them with intercardiac echocardiography (ICE), an ultrasound catheter placed in the heart to determine the size of the holes.

Compared to an open-heart operation, the new method is less invasive, and patients do not require general anesthesia. Most are able to return home the next day, and they often can return to work within two to three days.
