Adopting a Tribute Garden: Bernice Doll’s story

This May, Bernice Doll will spend Memorial Day alone. Her beloved husband, Dr. Eugene Doll, joined his heavenly Father in March just four months after moving into his cozy accommodations at the Mandan Living Center. They loved Gene’s new home and Bernice was a faithful visitor to Eugene. They could often be seen together playing a board game or sharing dinner in the beautiful dining room overlooking the bluffs of western Mandan.

Eugene and Bernice Doll often enjoyed the fresh air and summer sun while on the walking paths adjacent to the Mandan Living Center’s Tribute Gardens.

When Eugene died, Bernice made the decision to adopt a Tribute Garden in his memory. According to her, Eugene was always very proud that he and Bernice were chosen as models for the Tribute Garden brochure.

Eugene had spent his entire lifetime as a soil scientist earning his Ph.D. in 1953 and working in several locations throughout the nation as well as South America, Southeast Asia and Africa until his retirement in 1990. Soil research and botany were his passion.

Once Bernice has decided which garden she would like to adopt, a permanent plaque will be placed at that site thereby memorializing the man who so loved the earth’s abundant gifts of agricultural beauty.

Perhaps the day will come when you, too, will want to adopt a Tribute Garden. We hope you do. Your adoption of a Tribute Garden will honor or memorialize your loved one for all of time and will do much to preserve the beauty of the Mandan Living Center. Please feel free to contact Misty Schmidt in administration at the Mandan Living Center at 701.323.1404 for more information on how you can honor or memorialize someone special this way.
