Question and answer

Overactive bladder and stress incontinence help is available.

Causes

Could you have an overactive bladder?

Do you…
  • Use the bathroom more than eight times in a 24-hour period?
  • Have strong sudden urges to urinate?
  • Wake up to urinate two or more times a night?
  • Wear pads to protect yourself in case of a wetting accident?
  • Feel that going to the bathroom so often interferes with the things you want to do?

These are all symptoms of an overactive bladder, a condition that results from sudden, involuntary contraction of the muscle in the wall of the bladder. It is especially common in older adults; however; it should not be considered a normal part of aging.

Could you have stress incontinence?

Do you…
  • Lose urine during physical activities?
  • Have slight losses of urine when sneezing, coughing or laughing?

Stress incontinence occurs when you sneeze, cough, laugh, jog or do other activities that put pressure on your bladder. It is the most common type of urinary incontinence in women.

Solutions

How to reduce urgency:

1. Stop and stand very still. Sit down if you can.
2. Relax. Take a deep breath. Try to think of something other than the bathroom.
3. Contract your pelvic muscles four to five times to keep from leaking.

Physical therapy can help you regain control of your bladder. Simple behavioral modifications and pelvic floor exercises have been shown to be very effective in treating bladder problems.
