A new view on surgery

The eyes of a hawk are eight to 10 times more powerful than that of a human. This keen eyesight allows hawks to see a very small object from a mile away. In the world of surgery, enhanced vision is a signficant advantage, as seeing close up is one of the most improtant aspects fo a surgeon's job.

da Vinci Surgical System

Medcenter One now offers the da Vinci® Surgical System, which allows our skilled surgeons to perform complex procedures in a minimally invasive fashion, which means tiny incisions, minimal scarring and a quicker return to your normal activities. Medcenter One is the first and only healthcare provider in the Bismarck-Mandan area to offer this innovative technology, which is the most-advanced available for minimally invasive surgery.

For the patient, benefits may include:
  • Significantly less pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Less scarring
  • Shorter recovery time
  • A faster return to everyday activities

Traditional open surgery requires large incisions, left, whereas
da Vinci uses tiny incisions, right. This example compares a traditional hysterectomy with the da Vinci procedure.

How it works

Though it is called a robot, the da Vinci® Surgical System cannot act on its own. Our skilled surgeons control every movement. Robotic-assisted surgery provides surgeons with enhanced capabilities, including high-definition 3-D vision and a magnified view thanks to a small camera inserted into the body through a minor incision. The surgeon has control over the robotic system, which translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments that enter the body through other minor incisions. The instruments mimic—and, at times, exceed—the complex movements of the human hand and wrist.
